Really??

OK - so I don't want to get down to work today, and what better way to justify my lack of ambition than to think I'm doing the world a favor by updating my blog??

But... I find this really interesting... a group flew over the Amazon rain forest this week and photographed unknown tribes of natives, who they believe have never had contact with the outside world before. And what's more... this group believes that there are approximately 100 similar tribes -people who've never been in direct contact with the outside world, 50 of these groups live in the Amazon region along the border between Peru and Brazil. And we're in danger of losing them because of the pressure and loss of the Amazon rainforest. Having spent some time in the Amazon last year, what an unimaginable tragedy this would be... and what makes the outside world so superior anyways?

Comfort Movies...

As I was suffering through a couple of days of food poisoning this week (I refuse to believe that if it had been a virus or bug that I am the only one that could get sick, let alone that sick - I don't remember the last time that I spent two days in bed!), I realized that like some people have comfort foods (and I do have those also - can anyone say lasagna or ice cream?!), or comfort books (which I have also, although I haven't had much of a chance to read lately) or blankets or... I have comfort movies. Depending on the need at the moment, here's a selection of my favorite comfort movies:

I Really Need to Relax and Sleep Movies:
  • Star Wars, Episodes IV - VI, but especially IV
  • Indiana Jones - a man in a leather coat, with a whip... what else could be so relaxing?!
  • The Lord of the Rings - any and all of them, the extended versions
  • Any of the Disney and Pixar animated movies
I Am Feeling Sad And Lonely and need something Movies:
  • The Count of Monte Cristo
  • Pride & Prejudice - currently I favor the Kiera Knightley version, but I also enjoy the six hour A&E version
  • Sense & Sensibility
  • While You Were Sleeping
  • You've Got Mail
  • The Magic of Ordinary Days - a really sweet little Hallmark Hall of Fame movie (terrible book, but really charming movie)
I Want to Laugh Movies:
  • Galaxy Quest
  • Princess Bride
  • StarDust - this movie works for every category
  • Lady Hawk - I think Matthew Broderick is hysterical in this!
  • The Princess Diaries - I LOVE Anne Hathaway...
I Need to Escape Movies:
  • Harry Potter - again, any and all of them

There are others, but these are the ones I find in my DVD player over and over again... Am I weird or what?

A Late Mother's Day Tribute...

Here's to the ultimate Mom... who always reassures me that I'm OK, that boys really are dumb, and that science really is cool. Happy late Mother's Day with lots and lots of love!!
